Artist's Statement

I am inspired by what survives the onslaught of natural forces. I observe systems moving in cycles – generating, decaying, and regenerating – both in the natural and man-made worlds.  My work captures my curiosity with the structure and composition of things and the impact of time on them.

Made of clay and found materials, my large-scale sculptures are stacked and assembled from seemingly disparate parts. They are based on recognizable structural manmade forms—pallets, cinder blocks, and columns. These forms are foundational to our economy, but often overlooked and abandoned and frequently relegated to the stream of waste. Through my work, I utilize broken, repaired, and meticulously reworked versions of these form by using layers of glaze to simulate worn surfaces. My sculptural forms honor useful objects. My work investigates value and questions how we repair and how we abandon. Patina, scale and presentation devices are used to represent an inquiry into value. Natural degradation and patination, therefore, have a strong presence through this body of work. Interweaving feelings of hope and futility, I subvert the expectation of the discarded object to comment human ingenuity in our current urban environments.
